Subdomain moves is now supported by Google Change of Address Tool

A few weeks ago Google’s John Mueller threw out hints that subdomain support may soon be coming to Change of Address Tool. Finally that addition has come about. Without making any formal announcement about it, Google has added subdomain moves support in the arsenal of Google Webmaster Tools.

Before the addition of the new tool, it was not possible to let Google know that a subdomain is being moved to a new domain, through the Google Webmaster Tools. Now, that problem has been solved. However, the Change of Address Tool doesn’t yet support moves from HTTP to HTTPS which is something many people still want.

The new feature is reflected in the documentation of the Use of the Change of Address Tool. In the instruction, the first line earlier read, “If you’ve moved your site to a new domain, use the Change of address tool in Webmaster Tools.” Now it says “domain or subdomain.”

In the documentation, under the Request an address change subheading, it now reads “Use the Change of address tool when your site move entails a domain or subdomain change, such as changing from http://fish.example-petstore.com to http://example.com or http://example-petstore.com.

Menashe Avramov was the first person to notice the change and has created a pdf document to highlight the changes.
